ASTM F1821Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Toddler Beds

Core Objective

Prevent risks such as bed-clamp injuries, suffocation, tipping, and component detachment for young children, ensuring the safety of children aged 15 months to 5 years and weighing ≤22.7 kg (50 lbs) in normal use and foreseeable scenarios of misuse, thereby reducing the risk of fatal incidents such as head/neck entrapment and guardrail failure.

Standard Definition 

ASTM F1821 is the mandatory compliance standard for cribs issued by ASTM. The current latest version is ASTM F1821-19(ε1). It has been incorporated into 16 CFR Part 1217 by the US CPSC and serves as the core basis for the listing of cribs on North American markets and platforms such as Amazon. 

The standard applies to cribs that can accommodate full-size crib mattresses (including crib conversion models), but not to cribs, single beds, playpens, etc.

Testing And Certification Requirements

The product must undergo comprehensive testing by an ISO 17025-accredited third-party laboratory. The key requirements are as follows:  

Structural Safety: The mattress support system must meet standards for static loads and stability; the guardrail strength must be adequate, and the locking mechanism must be reliable, with no risk of accidental opening; the gaps between railings/boards must be controlled to prevent entrapment. 

Gaps and Corners: The extension of corner pillars must be ≤1.5 mm; there must be no sharp edges/points; the clips and shear points must be protected to prevent injuries.  

Chemical Safety: The total lead content of components that can be touched must be ≤100 ppm, and the lead content of coatings must be ≤90 ppm. The limits for phthalates in plasticizers comply with regulations.  

Markings and Instructions: The product must bear permanent markings indicating the manufacturer, dimensions, age range, weight capacity, and safety warnings. A clear installation and usage manual should be provided, along with guidance on maintaining and replacing the bed frame.  

Passing these tests and meeting the relevant standards is a prerequisite for a toddler bed to legally enter the North American market.
