ASTM F1772Standard Specification for Harnesses for Rescue and Sport Activities

Source:Besa Testing

Core Objective

Prevent the risks of falls and component failures in scenarios such as rope rescue, rock climbing, and mountaineering, ensuring the personal safety of users in both normal and foreseeable extreme situations, and clearly define the requirements for the reliability and adaptability of product structures.

Standard Definition

ASTM F1772 is the core safety specification for rescue and athletic seatbelts published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

The current version is ASTM F1772-24, which replaces the previous version ASTM F1772–17. This standard applies to full-body, seated, and chest-style seatbelts used in technical rope rescue, rock climbing, and cave exploration scenarios, serving as the primary compliance basis for listing on North American markets and major e-commerce platforms.

Testing And Certification Requirements

The product must undergo comprehensive testing by a third-party laboratory accredited to ISO 17025. The key requirements are as follows:

Strength Performance: Static tensile strength of the belt ≥15kN, leg rings ≥10kN, overall minimum tensile strength ≥22kN; melt fracture strength not less than 7.5kN.

Dynamic Durability: Drop impact force of 4 meters ≤6kN; pass 500 friction cycles and 300 hours of UV exposure testing without cracking or loosening.

Structural Safety: Sewing strength meets standards, fastening mechanisms are reliable; chest harnesses must be labeled as “not for use alone” and should be paired with seat harnesses.

Special Controls: Child versions comply with lead and phthalate limits; products for children under 3 years old must pass small-part testing.

Marking Requirements: Clearly indicate manufacturer information, dimensions, load capacity, manufacturing year, and safety warnings such as wear checks.

Passing this standard of testing is a prerequisite for the legal entry of the product into the North American market.
