ASTM F1427Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Bunk Beds

Source:Besa Testing

Core Objective

Standardize the design and performance safety of bunk beds to prevent accidents such as falls, entrapment, structural failure, and strangulation, thereby ensuring the personal safety of children during use.

Standard Definition

ASTM F1427 is a specialized safety standard for bunk beds. The current most recent version is F1427-21, which has been incorporated into federal regulations (16 CFR Part 1513) by the U.S. CPSC. It applies to residential bunk beds with a base that is more than 762 mm above the ground and is not suitable for products used in institutions such as prisons and dormitories. It is a core compliance standard for the North American market.

Testing And Certification Requirements

The product must undergo comprehensive testing by a CPSC-approved third-party laboratory to serve as the basis for issuing a Certificate of Compliance for Children’s Products (CPC). The core requirements are as follows:

Structural Safety: The bed frame must withstand a load of 181 kg, the guardrail height must be ≥12.7 cm, and the step spacing of the ladder must be 30.5-40.7 cm, with the steps not loosening after 10,000 impacts.

Protection Against Clogging and Falling: The opening of the bed frame must pass a test with a wedge block and a 9 cm sphere, with vertical protrusions ≤5 mm, and the gap between the mattress and the bed frame must meet safety limits.

Material Safety: The coating must have lead content ≤90 ppm, cadmium content ≤75 ppm, and a total of 6 phthalates ≤0.1%. TCEP/TCPP flame retardants are prohibited.

Labeling Requirements: A permanent warning label must be affixed, clearly stating “Do not use upper bunk for children under 6 years old” (font size ≥4.8 mm), accompanied by a compliance statement and registration information. Meeting these standards is a mandatory condition for the product to be approved for distribution in the US market.
