ASTM F1169Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Full-Size Baby Cribs
Core Objective
The standard ensures the safety of full-size crib designs, structures, and materials, preventing injuries such as falls, entrapment, suffocation, and structural collapse, thereby safeguarding the physical safety of infants during sleep and care.
Standard Definition
ASTM F1169 is a specialized safety specification for full-size cribs issued by ASTM. The current mandatory version is F1169-19, which has been adopted by the U.S. CPSC as a federal regulation (16 CFR Part 1219). It applies to full-size cribs with an internal length of 133 ± 5.1 cm and a width of 71 ± 5.1 cm (including accompanying cradles/diaper-changing tables). It does not apply to playpens, portable cribs, or other non-full-size infant sleep products. It is the core compliance standard for products of this type in the North American market.
Testing And Certification Requirements
The product must undergo comprehensive testing by a CPSC-approved third-party laboratory to serve as the basis for issuing a Certificate of Compliance for Children’s Products (CPC).
The core requirements include: Structural Testing: verification of the strength and durability of the mattress support system, slats, and fasteners; prohibition of side-pull design; Dimension Control: side rail spacing ≤ 6 cm, mattress-bed gap ≤ 25 mm, corner pillars with anti-twisting design, no hazardous shear/crush gaps;
Material Safety: coating lead content ≤ 90 ppm, compliant with CPSIA chemical limits, no sharp edges, easily detachable small components;
Marking Requirements: affixing permanent tracking labels and warning signs, including manufacturer information and safety warnings. Compliance is a mandatory condition for products to be sold or purchased in the US market.
