ASTM F1004Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Expansion Gates and ExpandableEnclosures

Source:Besa Testing

Core Objective

Prevent the risks of pinching, tipping over, falling, suffocation, and other hazards associated with the use of expandable doors, expandable fences by infants aged 6-24 months, thereby reducing safety hazards in normal use and foreseeable scenarios of misuse or abuse, and ensuring the safe isolation and protection of the infant’s activity area.

Standard Definition

ASTM F1004 is a specialized safety standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International). The current valid version is ASTM F1004-25. This standard has been incorporated into mandatory regulations (16 CFR Part 1239) by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and applies to expandable gates used for door isolation in residential settings, self-supporting expandable fences used to delineate activity areas, but does not cover similar products intended for commercial, institutional, agricultural, or pet use.

Testing And Certification Requirements

The product must undergo testing and receive a report from a third-party laboratory accredited by the CPSC, clearly indicating the version of ASTM F1004-25. The testing must meet requirements related to the safety of structural materials (lead content limits, absence of sharp edges and points), compliance with gap dimensions (vertical rod spacing, bottom gaps, etc.), strength stability (ability to withstand horizontal thrust, vertical forces, lateral forces), reliability of locking mechanisms (anti-child unlocking, durability of opening and closing cycles), and permanent labels and warning markings (including the new 2025 version’s warning for unattended pet entries). These requirements are mandatory for relevant products to enter the US market.
