ASTM D4151Standard Test Method for Flammability of Blankets
Core Objective
To identify blanket fabrics that are prone to ignition and surface transmission of flames, and to classify them according to the ASTM fire rating system. This is used for acceptance testing for commercial shipments and is not directly equivalent to a real fire risk assessment.
Standard Definition
ASTM D4151 is a standard test method for the flammability of blanket fabrics published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International).
· Applicability: The primary body of fabric for various types of household/commercial blankets (cotton, wool, synthetic fibers, blends), excluding blankets with heating wires.
· Non-applicability: Textiles used in clothing (not compatible with 16 CFR Part 1610’s fire retardant standards for clothing), blankets with heating elements, mattresses/bedding, and other textiles.
Testing and Certification Requirements
A test report issued by a third-party laboratory accredited by ASTM (such as a CPSC-approved entity) must include the version number ASTM D4151-23. Blankets are classified as Class I as the general entry requirement, which is a voluntary industry standard and not a mandatory regulation enforced by the CPSC.
