16 CFR Part 1262Safety Standard for Magnets

Core Objective

Reduce the risk of internal damage and intestinal blockage caused by children ingesting magnets.  

 

What are “Applicable Magnetic Product”?

According to the definition in 16 CFR Part 1262, an applicable magnetic product is one that: 

Structural characteristics: contains loose/separable magnets that can be placed in a small component testing cylinder. 

Functional purpose: is intended for recreational, educational, or stress-relieving use (not for toy purposes).

 

Testing and Certification Requirements

Third-party testing: 

Magnetic products must be tested by a CPSC-approved third-party laboratory to ensure compliance with 16 CFR Part 1262/ASTM F963-17 standards and all other applicable child product safety regulations. 

Child Product Certificate (CPC): 

Domestic manufacturers or importers must issue a Child Product Certificate (CPC) based on the results of third-party testing, with the following information clearly stated in Part 2 of the certificate (Reference Standards): “16 CFR Part 1262 — Magnet safety standard.”
