16 CFR Part 1260Safety Standard For Operating Cords On Custom Window Coverings

Core Objective

Reduce the risk of strangulation and entanglement caused by ropes for children. 

 

What are “custom window treatment operation ropes”? 

 According to the definitions in 16 CFR Part 1260 and ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2018, custom window treatment operation ropes refer to: 

Structural features: adjustable ropes, chains, and other components for window treatments; length/structural protection against entrapment. 

Functional purpose: control the up-and-down movement and opening/closing of custom curtains and blinds.

 

Testing and Certification Requirements

Third-party testing:

 Products with operating cords on custom window treatments must be tested by a third-party laboratory accredited by the CPSC to ensure compliance with 16 CFR Part 1260/ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2018 and all other applicable child product safety regulations. 

Child Product Certificate (CPC): 

Domestic manufacturers or importers must issue a Child Product Certificate (CPC) based on the results of third-party testing, with the following clearly stated in Part 2 of the certificate (Reference Standards): “16 CFR Part 1260 – Operating cords on custom window coverings.”
