16 CFR Part 1224 Safety Standard for Portable Bed Rails
Core objectives
Minimize the risks to children associated with the use of portable bed rails, particularly to prevent children from falling off adult beds and becoming trapped between the bed rail and the mattress.
What is a “portable bed rail”?
According to the CPSC’s definition, a portable bed rail is a device designed to be installed on an adult bed to prevent a child from falling off the bed.
Testing and certification requirements
Third-party testing:
The portable bed rail must be tested by a third-party laboratory accredited by the CPSC to ensure compliance with the standards for portable bed rails and all other applicable safety regulations for children’s products.
Children’s Product Certificate (CPC):
Domestic manufacturers or importers must issue a Children’s Product Certificate (CPC) based on test results from a third party, detailing each applicable rule and providing evidence that the product complies with those rules. In Part 2 of the CPC (References to Standards), the following must be clearly stated: “16 CFR part 1224 – Portable bed rails.”
