16 CFR Part 1222 Safety Standard for Bedside Sleepers
Core objectives
Minimize the risks of injury or death associated with the use of bedside cribs, including risks related to entrapment and suffocation, risks related to structural integrity and product assembly, and risks related to a lack of consumer education on the proper use of the product.
What is a “bedside crib”?
According to the definitions in 16 CFR Part 1222 and ASTM F2906, a bedside crib (Bedside Sleeper) refers to: Structural features: a combination of a rigid frame, which may be combined with a fabric or mesh material, or both, used for the sides, end, or bottom of a bedside crib.
Usage: It can be securely attached to the edge of an adult bed.
Purpose of Use: To provide a sleep environment for infants.
Testing and certification requirements.
Third-party testing: Testing must be conducted by a third-party laboratory accredited by the CPSC to ensure compliance with the standards for bedside cribs and all other applicable safety requirements for children’s products.
Child Product Certificate (CPC): Domestic manufacturers or importers must issue a Child Product Certificate (CPC) based on third-party testing results, detailing each applicable requirement and demonstrating that the product meets those requirements. In Part 2 of the CPC (References to Standards), the following must be clearly stated: “16 CFR part 1222 – Bedside sleepers.”
