Toy EN71 Certification

Introduction to Toy EN71 Certification

EN71 is the standard for toy products in the European market. Many countries have established their own safety regulations for these products, and manufacturers must ensure that their products comply with the relevant standards before being sold in the region. Manufacturers are responsible for accidents caused by production defects, poor design, or the use of inappropriate materials. Consequently, the EN71 toy certification regulation was introduced in Europe. Its purpose is to set technical specifications for toys entering the European market through the EN71 standard, thereby reducing or preventing harm to children from toys.

Scope of EN71 Certification Testing

This toy directive applies to any product or material designed for or intended for play by children under 14 years of age.
Mechanical and physical properties; flammability; migration of certain elements; chemistry-related experimental devices; non-experimental chemistry toys; pictograms for age warning labels; finger paints: colorants, preservatives, migration of specific elements, primary aromatic amines, olfactory and taste tests, pH value, product information including agents, additives, humectants, and surfactants; organic chemical compounds: flame retardants, sweat color fastness, colorants, primary aromatic amines, monomer migration, solvent migration, solvent inhalation, wood preservatives, non-wood preservatives, plasticizers, toxicity assessment, pH value, formaldehyde.
Additionally, for electric toys, including battery-operated toys and toys with AC/DC power adapters. Besides the general EN71 toy standard testing, electromagnetic compatibility testing is also conducted, covering EMI (electromagnetic interference) and EMS (electromagnetic susceptibility).

The testing items included in EN71 are as follows:

1) EN71-1: Toy Safety – Part 1: Mechanical and Physical Properties

2) EN71-2: Toy Safety – Part 2: Flammability

3) EN71-3: Toy Safety – Part 3: Migration of Certain Elements

4) EN71-4: Toy Safety – Part 4: Experimental Sets for Chemistry and Related Activities

5) EN71-5: Toy Safety – Part 5: Chemical Toys (Excluding Experimental Sets)

6) EN71-7: Requirements for Finger Paints

7) EN71-8: Swings, Slides and Similar Play Equipment for Indoor and Outdoor Family Entertainment

8) EN71-9: General Requirements for Organic Compounds in Toys

9) EN71-10: Preparation and Extraction of Samples of Organic Compounds

10) EN71-11: Methods of Analysis for Organic Compounds
