AS/NZS ISO 8124.2: Safety of Toys - Part 2: Flammability
Primary Objective:
To prohibit the use of high-risk flammable materials in toys and to limit the rate at which toys burn, thereby preventing fires and burns. Equivalent adoption of ISO 8124-2:2023.
Standard Definition:
Applicability: All toys intended for children under the age of 14, with a focus on high-risk categories such as head wear, costume clothing, soft-filled toys, and tent-type toys. Key Terms: Flammable material refers to materials that, uponcontact with a small fire source, exhibit a burning rate exceeding safety limits or are prone to producing flammable debris.
Testing and Certification Requirements:
Core test: Burningrate test (headwear category <10 mm/s, clothing category <30 mm/s); prohibition of the use of highly flammable solids such as cellophane and high-risk flammable liquids.
Certificaton Compliance: Requires testing by an accredited Australian/New Zealand laboratory; products with a burning rate of 10-30 mm/s must display a "Keep Away from Fire" warning. Compliance allows entry into the Australian/New Zealand market.
