EN 14988 Children's high chairs - Safety requirements and testing methods
Primary Purpose:
To regulate the safety of the design and performance of children's highchairs, to prevent accidents such as dumping, slippery seats, clutches, and broken parts, and to protect the physical safety of children between 6 months and 3 years of age (weight 15 kg) during eating.
Standard Definition:
EN14988 is a special safety specification for children's eating furniture, the current latest version is EN14988-1: 2020 + EN14988-2: 2020 (partially implemented), in line with the requirements of the EU GPSD directive. This standard applies to household child booster chairs (including foldable models), but not to car booster chairs. It is a key compliance standard for the European market.
Testing and certification requirements:
The product needs to be fully tested by an EU-recognized third-party laboratory as the basis for CE certification.
The core requirements are as follows:
structural safety: the whole machine is tilted at 10 C without dumping, the seats can withstand 50 kg static pressure without deformation, the rupture strength of the restraint band is 300N;Anti-jamming and anti-detachment seat openings need to pass 6cm sphere test, adjustable parts locked to withstand 100 N tension without loosening, no sharp edge;
Material safety: the material in contact with food area meets the requirements of food contact grade, coating lead 90 ppm, phthalate sum 0.1%;
ldentification requirements: affixed with a permanent warning label, clearly "use must be tied to the restraint belt" (font 4mm), with installation instructions and applicable age range. Meeting the requirements of this standard is a sine qua non condition for the product to be allowed to enter the EU market.
