ASTM F2853 Standard Test Method for Determining Lead

Content Purpose: 

To establish aprecise and efficient method for detecting lead content, standardize the process for quantifying lead in paint layers, similar coatings, and various substrates, providing scientific evidence for the regulation of lead content in children's products and user goods, thereby ensuring the safety and health of users. 

 

Definition:

ASTM F2853 is a standard test method for detecting lead content published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)The current version is ASTM F2853-10 (reapproved in 2015). The full title is "Standard Test Method for Determining the Content of Lead in Paint Layers and Similar Coatings or Substrates and Homogeneous Materials by Energy-Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy Using Multiple Wavelength Single-Color Excitation Beams." This method is applicable to the detection of lead content in a wide range of materials, including ABS plastics, polyethylene, wood, and fabrics, and serves as the core testing basis for the regulation of harmfulsubstances in products in the North American market.

 

Testing and Certification Requirements:

Scope: Covers coatings (non-metallic coatings) and substrates;

lead content range: 14-1200 mg/kg (uncoated samples), 30-450 mg/kg (coated samples);

Test Conditions: The analysis area of the sample must be uniform and not less than the size of the X-ray excitation beam; there must be no visible defects visually;

Method Requirements: Employs multiplewavelength single-color excitation X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, following the IUPAC nomenclature for X-ray lines;

Results Application: The test results serve as the core basis for determining the compliance of products with regard to lead content, supporting CPC certification and market access.
