ASTM F2040Standard Specification for Helmets Used for Recreational Snow Sports

Core Objective

The mandatory safety requirements for helmets in recreational snow sports (skiing, snowboarding, etc.) in North America aim to prevent risks such as head trauma and helmet detachment, thereby ensuring the protection of the head for participants.

 

Standard Definition 

Developing Organization: ASTM International (F08 Committee on Sporting Equipment). 

Current Version: ASTM F2040-18 (replaces F2040-11).

Applicability: Adult/Youth recreational non-motorized snow sports helmets, excluding motorized and extreme racing models.

 

Testing And Certification Requirements

Impact attenuation: Testing with 3 types of anvil platforms (flat / hemispherical / edge), peak acceleration ≤300 g, requires pre-treatment with high and low temperatures, and humidity.

 Fixed system: The lower jaw strap can withstand a load of 250 N without failure, featuring a design to prevent detachment.

 Physical safety: No sharp edges / protrusions; child-sized models require compliance with small-part testing. 

Chemical safety: Total lead content of contactable components ≤100 ppm, 8 phthalates ≤0.1%. 

Mandatory markings: Manufacturer, intended user group, standard number (ASTM F2040-18), and safety warnings. 

Compliance requirements: ISO 17025 laboratory testing; child-sized models require a CPC certificate, adult-sized models require a GCC certificate. Full compliance is required to enter the North American market.
