ASTM F2012Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Stationary Activity Centers
Core Objective
Prevent risks of tipping over, pinching, strangulation, suffocation, and structural collapse by providing a safe environment for infants aged 4 months to before walking (approximately 12 to 18 months) to engage in activities. The current latest version is ASTM F2012-24 (released in April 2025), which has been incorporated into the mandatory regulation 16 CFR Part 1238 by the U.S. CPSC.
Standard Definition
Applicable to stationary activity centers: products that are standalone, stationary, completely encasing a child’s torso, and allow sitting/standing/limited walking/jumping/rotating (excluding walkers).
Testing And Certification Requirements
Structure and Stability: Through side-flip/forward-leaning/static/dynamic load tests, it does not topple or collapse. The leg opening dimensions are controlled to prevent entrapment. The spring/bouncing structure is durable and failsafe.
Physical Protection: No sharp edges/points; no easily detachable small parts (to prevent suffocation); no pinching/shearing risk; restraint/locking mechanisms are reliable.
Chemical Safety: Total lead content of accessible components ≤100 ppm, coating lead ≤90 ppm; phthalates ≤0.1%. Labeling and Warning: Permanent labels indicate age suitability, “always under adult supervision,” and warnings against use by toddlers. The labels must pass a durability tensile test.
Key compliance points
All tests must be conducted by a laboratory accredited to ISO 17025, and a CPC certificate must be issued. Products manufactured/launched after July 5, 2025, must comply with F2012-24.
